Key insights from the ranking

The financial & professional services industry has taken first place as the most sustainable industry. With the lowest average CO2 emissions and lowest share of diesel in fleet combined with the second highest battery electric vehicle (BEV) the financial & professional services industry easily made it to the top. The second most sustainable industry (technology) is nine points away from the financial & professional services industry.

While all industries are decreasing the share of diesel cars in fleets, the rate of change differs a lot depending on the industry. The financial and professional services industry has the lowest share of diesel cars in fleet, but the construction industry has seen the largest decrease over the past two years. In 2021, 61% of cars leased in construction industry fleets were diesel compared to 2023 where it was only at 22%.

Only three industries (technology, healthcare and financial & professional services) have decreased the share of petrol cars in fleet since 2021. The rest of the industries have remained stable or increased the share of petrol cars. The largest increases were in the transport industry (+8 percentage points) and construction (+7 percentage points).

The share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) has more than doubled in each industry over the past two years. The largest increase has been in the construction industry, going from a share of 7% BEVs in fleet in 2021 to 32% in 2023. While all industries have increased the share of BEVs, the healthcare industry is lagging behind with a share of 11% BEVs in 2023, the lowest of all industries.

Industry benchmarks:

As part of the Fleet Sustainability Ranking by Industry, benchmarks for seven of the industries included in the ranking were created. Overall, there are some trends that can be seen across all industries, especially when it comes to average emissions and fleet powertrains by country.
