The costs of electric driving

When it comes to the overall cost of an electric vehicle (EV), you can expect to save more money compared to a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. But how much? Whether you're charging at home or on the road, you'll need accurate figures for your monthly budget.

How to calculate the cost of a charge?

Charging at home or at work

The cost of charging your EV at home depends on the cost of electricity in your area. An average electric car consumes 15 to 20 kWh per 100 km. So if the price of electricity at home is € 0.25 and you drive an average of 15,000 km a year, then the cost of charging your car will be between € 563 and € 750 a year. Bear in mind that in most cases charging at home is cheaper than at public charging locations.

When charging on the road, you pay the price set by the charging station operator. In addition to the kWh price, the energy provider may also charge for the length of stay at the charging station.

Comparing EV vs ICE costs

Is an electric vehicle cheaper or more expensive than a petrol or diesel car? When comparing costs, it’s important to look beyond the purchase price and consider the costs involved in actually running a car. This includes fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation.

FAQs about charging costs

Are electricity costs of home charging reimbursed? This is a similar process to applying for a refund for your car's fuel. The charging point stores all the information about the charging of your electric vehicle. Using the meter built into your charger, you or your employer can calculate the cost of electricity for each month.  The charging costs haven't been settled on my energy bill. How is that possible? The business electricity costs for home charging are reimbursed but the energy supplier is not involved in this. This is why the charging settlement costs are not included on the energy bill.
