Government bonuses
for electric vehicles
Bonus reform in October 2024
Electric vehicles are booming! By 2021, these powertrains (100% electric or plug-in hybrids) will already account for more than 20% of registrations in Luxembourg. To support the democratisation of this type of vehicle, the Luxembourg government is pursuing its proactive policy of offering incentives for leasing (or purchasing) electric vehicles.
New grants for electric vehicles
Transition period until the end of September 2024
On 19 June 2024, the Government Council adopted a draft Grand Ducal regulation aimed at extending the financial aid scheme "Klimabonus Mobilitéit" for the promotion of zero-emissionCO2 road vehicles by 3 months (period July - September 2024) and under unchanged conditions, subject to finalisation of the legislative and regulatory procedures.
This extension applies to vehicles for which the sales contract was signed no later than 30 September 2024 and which arefirst put into circulation in Luxembourg no later than 30 September 2025.

Electricity bonuses
The Clever Fueren bonus was introduced for the first time in March 2019 by the Luxembourg government as an initiative to encourage the purchase of cleaner means of transport and contribute to the transition to more sustainable mobility.
There are several main reasons for introducing this bonus:
- Combating climate change
- Supporting sustainable development
- Stimulating innovation
On 5 June 2024, the Luxembourg government announced the continuation and partial reform of the Klimabonus Mobilitéit financial aid scheme, which will take effect in October 2024. The aim of this reform is to adapt the programme to changes in the market and make it more effective in achieving its objectives.
The deadlines for the current scheme, the changes introduced by the October 2024 reform and the new conditions for obtaining the premium are explained in the rest of this article.

Current scheme (until the end of September 2024)

- For cars with a certified fuel consumption of less than or equal to 18kWh/100km
- For cars with a certified fuel consumption of less than or equal to 20kWh/100km and a power output of less than or equal to 150 kilowatts
- For cars with at least 7 seats (the signatory must be a member of a household of at least 5 people), regardless of the vehicle's electricity consumption.
- For hydrogen-powered vehicles

The amount of aid is €3,000 in the following cases:
- For cars with a certified fuel consumption of less than or equal to 20 kWh/100 km but with a power rating of more than 150 kWh
- For cars with a certified fuel consumption of more than 20kWh/100km

From October 2024
From 1 October 2024, the amounts of aid will be staggered as follows for 100% electric vehicles ordered from that date.
6,000 for :
- 100% electric cars, provided their electrical energy consumption does not exceed 160 Wh/km (16 kWh/100 km).
- 100% electric cars with seven or more seats, provided that the applicant is part of a household of at least five people, to meet the needs of large families.
- 100% electric vans and hydrogen fuel cell cars.
A bonus of 3,000 euros for :
- 100% electric cars with an electrical energy consumption of between 161 Wh/km and 180 Wh/km. This threshold is raised to 200 Wh/km provided that the maximum net power of the car's propulsion system is less than or equal to 150 kilowatts.
Other electric cars, i.e. those whose electrical energy consumption exceeds 200 Wh/km (or 180 Wh/km when their power exceeds 150 kilowatts), will no longer be eligible for financial support, while hybrid vehicles will no longer be subsidised from 2021.
